WHY KEEP KOI?

Back in the early seventies, I was sitting in a Japanese garden next to an ancient Koi master. He posed a question: “WHY KEEP KOI?”
We sat in the sun, enjoying the peace and beauty of his garden. The tranquillity of the moment was palpable, and at first I was lost for words. Finally, it came to me: “They are just so Beautiful”
Time passed. Eventually he looked at me and said: “You are wrong… We keep Koi because – THEY MAKE OUR HEARTS GROW LARGER”

Now you can make what you want of this, but when I think back to that day, I can only ponder that what he meant was that the whole experience of koi keeping makes us better people.

Keeping koi will teach you patience, and will require dedication, compassion, pragmatism, tolerance, knowledge of water chemistry, building techniques, and most of all a sense humour – to name but a few of the disciplines a Koi keeper needs.
