We were determined not to sell Koi food again. We manufactured and sold a high-quality basic koi pellet back in the 1980’s under the name PROKOI. And back in those days it was one of the few koi foods manufactured outside of Japan that met all the nutritional requirements of Koi in the UK – at an affordable price.
Nowadays there are many good basic Koi foods on the market at affordable prices, but as always, I wanted more for our Koi and started adding freshness and variety to a basic superior pellet.
Friends, seeing how our Koi thrive on this food have persuaded me to sell it. So here it is –
THE REALLY SUPER KOI GROWTH AND COLOUR FOOD
BASIC PELLET ingredients Soya, wheat, rice, fish meal, wheatgerm, maize. Typical Analysis 32% Protein, Ash 8%, Vitamin A 5000iu/kg, vit D 500iu/kg, V E 100iu/kg.
A very good basic food, with room to improve.
SO, I ADDED FOR GROWTH.
Omega-3 fish oil and tuna oil, to increase the protein content.
Enhanced vitamin C to boost the normal function of the immune system.
And a Pro Biotic bacteria food supplement containing, Bifidobacterium brave BR03, B801, Y08, BL03, and various Lactobacillus strains to aid digestion.
THEN, I ADDED FOR VARIETY AND COLOUR DEVELOPMENT
Dried Silkworm pupae, Ground Crickets, Blood worms, River shrimp, and Organic Spirulina.
All of these additives have average protein levels in the range of 50-55%. So, I have assumed that I have increased the overall protein level from 32% to between 40-45% – difficult to be more accurate because of the variation in the raw ingredients.
Adding these extra, and odd-looking exotic ingredients has had some weird effects on the appearance of the food, it’s got “BITS” in it. It’s messy, it smells strongly, I recommend you dish it out with a spoon.
AND THE KOI LOVE IT.
But it’s not cheap

Following on from the research into enhanced vitamins and minerals in the feed we give our Koi, we have found a magic side effect to one of the products we have been adding to our new Super Super koi growth and colour food. It now reduces the danger of our koi being infected with parasites. It seems to be just as effective against gill and skin flukes, and although I do not have the equipment to test this, I think it has helped get rid of internal worms as well.
This is not going to be a secret, anyone who gets hold of this SUPER FOOD will immediately recognize the pungent smell of the Garlic that’s one of the extra ingredients added. (Garlic has been found to help prevent many diseases. Numerous modern studies confirm that garlic has definite antibiotic properties and is effective against a wide spectrum of bacteria, fungi and viruses).
This is in the form of a human-grade product, which is processed at low temperatures to maintain the active ingredient Allicin*. Another addition is organic seaweed, high in vitamins and naturally occurring minerals.
These added extras STINK don’t combine with the pellets well, don’t float and in fact, are a damn nuisance, BUT the koi love it, and it seems to get rid of the parasites.
You can see them fight for the floating food as it is given to them and then follow the denser feed to the bottom of the pond and forage in the most natural way for koi to behave. They rapidly hoover up the extra nutrition from the bottom of the pond THEY LOVE IT.
Many people this year, probably down to the very unsettled weather conditions at the start of the season, have been fighting overwhelming and constantly re-occurring attacks from various organisms – parasites and flukes etc. So much so that health problems seem to have become more of a problem this year than ever before, and concerns have been raised that some parasites are becoming immune to conventional treatments
The health of my own koi has prompted me to add all the above-listed boosters to the feeds that I use here at Koiman Enterprises. Friends visiting and viewing our koi notice the fighting fit appearance of all the tanks, so much so that we have to warn people to stand back from the water’s edge when we feed the fish to avoid them getting wet as the koi splash in their eagerness to feed.
I have had to make up extra food for our friends to take home with them, and they come back for more, despite the food stinking, sticking to hands, and generally not being kind to humans. It is not for the faint-hearted.
